Where Faith Met Science
The rebranded 'Reflect on Faith' forum discussion got off to a great start with an evening entitled, 'Where Faith Meets Science?' The evening, presented by the former LP Fellowship meeting, was hosted by Anne Kelly, member of The Crossing, and featured special guest speaker Marj Bachelor, research mathemetician from Cambridge. Anne Kelly began the evening by introducing the concept of the universe being shown by physicists to be created from energy, a notion which Anne suggested was quite congruous with traditional understandings of God.
Marj Bachelor spoke of the ways in which mathematical models can help physicists to comprehend the the world when viewed at a sub-atomic level, and illustrated this in ways which the lay audience found understandable, no mean feat! She explained that it might be the case that the world as we know is a three dimensional sub-space in a multi-dimensional universe. In such a scenario, a creator God was certainly a possibility, even when typical scientific tools found it impossible to quantify or explain such a possibility. Marj illustrated this by pointing to the power of love in the world, which equally un quntifiable in scientific terms is a known reality in people's lives.
